The Weeping Water Legend tells of a battle which began when one tribe stole the daughter of another tribe’s chief, and ended three days later when all of the braves lay dead.  The tears cried by the families of the fallen warriors were said to have formed the “weeping waters”.  Hence our Weeping Water Creek that runs through our town.

The first white settlers arrived in 1856 and the town incorporated in l870.  The railroad arrived in l883.  Since then, many things have changed.  The steam whistle of an approaching passenger  train no longer echoes across the valley.  The livery stable has been replaced by a convenience store and auto shop.    However, a grocery store, bank and hardware store still stand on Eldora Avenue, the main street in town.    Rail cars still load grain from the elevator, and limestone from three quarries is still transported all around the globe.

Gone are the fire and forge of the blacksmiths, the opera house and the movie theatre, but baseball games  still bring out a crowd and the whole town shuts town when our teams make the State finals.  Local residents work hard to put on annual events – Limestone Days and the Cass County Fair.

Our City population is documented on a sign that reads 1,008.  We boast strong commerce including 5 auto services, 5 churches,  11 contractors, (construction, electrical,  and plumbing), the friendliest hardware store in Eastern Nebraska, 2 convenience stores, a grocery store, seven ways to find a meal or a cup of coffee and a piece of pie, medical and dental centers, and healthcare services,  11 industrial businesses, 8 legal/financial and insurance companies, a real estate office,  a variety of county/agricultural offices, library, community building, city park (with camping, picnicking and fishing), museums, 2 banks, dance studio, community theater,  2  funeral homes, 4 “beauty shops”, retail and specialty services, K-12 school, post office, winery, pumpkin patch, 5 daycares,  and more.

If you’re into the outdoors, take a try at our hiking/biking trail, parachute club, camping, public swimming pool, deer and pheasant hunting, gun club and close proximity to several  State parks.
