Quaintly positioned in a far west corner of Douglas County, Elkhorn is a charming suburb of Omaha that was recently annexed in 2007. Founded in 1965, Elkhorn or “Elks Horn” was named after the river of the Omaha Tribe. As you ramble across the streets of downtown Elkhorn today it feels virtually untouched from its developmental roots from 1866 when Union Pacific Railroad purchased a 40 acres tract from some home settlers. Elkhorn’s river access was the perfect place for a bustling westward railroad movement to the west. With the establishment of the “Elkhorn Station” significant growth began to spring up in the mid to late 1800's.

Today residents get to experience the nostalgia of days gone by while enjoying fabulous eateries which inhabit historical buildings in downtown Elkhorn. The former one room school house & community center was a place where the rich tradition of academic excellence began. That tradition still reigns today with Elkhorn High School (EHS) “Antler Pride” and Elkhorn South High School (ESHS) “Storm”. What started as a community by the river and railway access has extended east to 168th St. then south to F. St and North to Fort St.

Elkhorn community residents revel in small town spirit while benefitting from the experience of being a part of the City of Omaha.
